This is dripping with irony: perhaps the most inefficient administration in modern history now - when out of office - wants to advocate for greater government efficiency (via its NEC Deputy Director and Sen Warren economic director) and “civil service reform." Every single issue identified in this post was true, but the Biden Administration did nothing to address them and just continued to spend taxpayer dollars ad nauseum.
DOGE was a disaster. But I hope it's failure both politically and substantively does not prompt Dems to reflexively defend the pre-DOGE status quo. There's a lot we can do to actually make the government more efficient. I wrote about a few of those ideas today. 1/
Under the leadership of @POTUS, the @USOPM is actually making progress on real civil service reform - bringing accountability and enhanced pay-for-performance reforms to the federal workforce to create a high-performance culture.
Why the change in tone from former Biden officials? Presumably because they recognize the American people actually care about how their tax dollars are spent and that the role of government is to be a steward of that money. Doing more with less and focusing on the most critical priorities of Americans is simply common sense.
But is this really a change in tone? Nope. Read no further than the opening sentence of the second paragraph: “The next progressive administration [should]…restore government employee collective bargaining rights…, reinstate the employees that were wrongfully let go, and revive the operation of important programs.” None of those are consistent with a desire to reform civil service, but simply a clarion call to return to the status quo pre-Jan 21 of this year.
